By Dave Whitaker from 2002
Just two days after being at the NWA-TNA PPV, "The Scream Queen" Daffney was in Thomaston, GA. for the American Wrestling Alliance. I had the opportunity to interview her after her match with Malia Hosaka. Daffney was very friendly, honest, and expressed a true love for the business.
On what she's been doing besides NWA-TNA: Said she'd been doing the indy shows. Mainly Dusty Rhodes, TCW. Said this was the second time she'd been in to work for Johnny Grunge's AWA, and wants to come back.
How did she like the TNA PPV?: "It was great. It was awesome. I was thoroughly impressed with the production value, the talent, it was organized, everyone was nice. I had a blast."
On how she sees herself as a wrestler: Prefers to do the straight up wrestling like she did against Malia Hosaka. Feels she doesn't have the figure to wear some of the outfits, and is much more comfortable doing regular wrestling. Said she loved working with Hosaka, said Malia had really taken her under her wing, trained with her, and showed her how to have a match In the past, she'd just done run-ins as a valet/manager. Liked getting to work with Hosaka since she'd worked with guys so much. Said Hosaka had really taught her a lot.
On how she ended up in the lingerie battle royal despite her preference for regular wrestling: Said she was called by Bob Ryder about being in it. Daffney asked what the "skin factor" was and said she probably could not wear a thong. Said Ryder told her she could wear what she wanted, just know that it is a lingerie battle royal. She tried to come up with something that would be within the Daffney character, but would fit. "Daffney lingere" was what she sought. Said she was told "this is what we'd like you to do, you can wear what you like" so she was not pressured in any way to do anything uncomfortable. Thinks the battle royal was a way of them looking at many of the girls at once so that they could decide who they liked.
On if she'd be back with NWA-TNA: Said she'd really like to. Loved the fact that Jerry Jarrett told her that they had no problem with her working independents. Said that when she was with TNA, they would promote other things she was doing, she could promote TNA when she'd be doing indy shows. Really appreciates the openness and cross promotions. Loves still being able to work for groups like Dusty's, loves working indies, gives her a chance to keep her ring skills up.
Another thing she loves about house shows is being able to work the crowd, get one-on-one with the fans. Thinks on TV, you really can't do that. Noted how on house shows, you have ten minutes for a women's match, while on TV there's only three. Loves her character, said "they hate me" referring to the Daffney character.
On how the whole "Scream Queen" thing started and her character: She was bought into WCW to be this "weirdo girl" with David Flair. Said she was doing an angle with the Msifits and Vampiro. Said she was to bite Jerry Only on the nose, then Ed Ferrara told her to run down the hall screaming as loud as she could. She did, they loved it, and things just continued from there. She realizes that some don't like the character, but said that's what people knows, so that's what she does. Said that she'd love to do another character one day. Thinks it'd be a good challenge. Loves the fact that wrestling is part athleticism and part acting. Noted how when she was in WCW, she'd try doing things to change up the character, wearing a wig one week, showing she could go with many different looks. Loves the Daffney character because it gives her a chance to run around and act crazy.
On Vince Russo: Loved the guy. Said she loved the her character. Said he gave her, Crowbar, and David (Flair) a pretty big push. Noted he put the cruiserweight tile on her. Said she and David got to work the angle with he and Ric Flair. Said he treated her really well.
On the WWE training camp she attended: "It was tough." Said it was a big challenge because you were in the ring all the time, doing training drills and stuff. "I gave it my best." Said she was in the best shape of her career at that time, had lost some weight, trained really hard. She left with her head held high.
On if she watches the WWE now: "I catch it when I can." When she can't, she tries to tape it. Likes to check out what the women are doing, has some friends there and likes to see what they're doing.. Says anytime something is televised or on tape, she tries to watch it. Thinks its important to keep up with what's current.
On if she'd go back to the WWE one day: "It's great exposure for any actress/wrestler." Also noted how it was an ideal financial situation. Said she just wants to work, and "keep on keepin' on." Doesn't know what the future holds, but if she got the chance to go back, she'd definitely be interested in it.
On her life right now, despite being released from WCW about one before it went out of business: Said she still has an acting agent and is taking acting lessons. Said she's wrestling and independents and training. She's playing soccer on the weekends. "I'm able to do what I love. I feel really lucky, feel really blessed."
